Get Set Up for Payroll in Utah
This is to help those small business owners (we’re talking less than 10 employees, no fancy benefit stuff) who want a simple set-up for payroll. When you first register your company with the state of Utah, it will ask if you also want to get register with the Utah State Tax Commission and Department of Workforce Services. Like many solopreneurs, you may skip that part since you don’t plan on having employees or running payroll. Unfortunately, it is a multi-step process to get set up to run payroll after the fact but very do-able. To get set up for payroll in Utah (if you skipped that part earlier), here are the basics (the links may change over time):
Register with the Utah State Tax Commission
- Fill this out first! TC69 form https://tap.tax.utah.gov/TaxExpress//#16
- Then register for TAP, Utah’s Taxpayer Access Point https://tap.tax.utah.gov/TaxExpress//#1
- Example: 12345678-001-WTH
Register with the Utah Department of Workforce Services (state unemployment insurance)
- First, login here: https://id.utah.gov/login?goto=https:%2F%2Flogin.dts.utah.gov:443%2Fsso%2Foauth2%2Fauthorize%3Fclient_id%3DMordellidae-caroubier-596640%26redirect_uri%3Dhttps:%2F%2Fsecure.utah.gov%2Faccount-migration%2Fauthorization%26scope%3Dopenid%2520profile%2520email%2520phone%2520directory%26response_type%3Dcode&realm=%2F
- Then go to this website: https://jobs.utah.gov/ui/employer/Login.aspx
- Admin → Rate Notice → should have your Utah Registration No. and your Contribution Rate
- Example: C1-234567-8 or 1-234567-08, rate .002 to .005
Get Worker’s Comp Insurance
For more details, please visit Utah’s Labor Commission website. Many payroll providers have insurance referral partners, or you can check with your business insurance provider to add that to your policy.
